In reply to a question about the Western Sahara and United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) mandate renewal, specifically how the Council was going to handle the expected proposal from Morocco on autonomy, he said such a proposal was expected on 10 April. The Council's response would depend on its contents, taking into account all parties' views. On the one hand, there was the proposal for autonomy within Morocco; on the other hand, there was the view that self-determination for the region should include the option of independence. He was not confident that the Council would find a lasting solution in the next few months, but he was confident, however, that MINURSO's mandate would be renewed.

En respuesta a la cuestión sobre el Sahara Occidental y la renovación del mandato de la Misión de Naciones Unidas para el Sahara Occidental (MINURSO), específicamente cómo el Consejo iba a tratar la esperada propuesta Marroquí de autonomía, el Presidente dijo que dicha propuesta estaba prevista para el día 10 de Abril. La respuesta del Consejo dependerá de los contenidos de la misma, tomando en consideración los puntos vista de todas las partes implicadas. Por una parte está la propuesta de una autonomía dentro de Marruecos y por otra está la consideración de que la autodeterminación de la región debe incluir la opción de la independencia. El presidente no tenía mucha confianza en que el Consejo pudiera llegar a una solución duradera del conflicto en los próximos meses, sin embargo, estaba seguro de la renovación del mandato de la MINURSO.

En réponse à une question sur le Sahara Occidental et le renouvellement du mandat de la MINURSO, spécialement comment le Conseil va traiter la proposition marocaine d’autonomie annoncée, le Président a déclaré qu’une telle proposition était attendue pour le 10 avril. La réponse du Conseil dépendra de son contenu, en tenant compte des avis de toutes les parties. D’une part il y a la proposition d’autonomie au sein du Maroc; d’autre part il y a le point de vue que l’autodétermination pour la région doit comprendre l’option d’indépendance. Il n’était pas confiant que le Conseil trouverait une solution durable dans les prochains mois, mais il était certain que le mandat de la MINURSO serait néanmoins renouvelé.
